General statistics on doctors in Norway 2012

As of 5th March 2012, 24 612 physicians and 4 333 medical students are members of The Norwegian Medical Association, bringing the total to 28 974 members. This is the highest number of members ever. The database of The Norwegian Medical Association indicates a number of about 25 240 physicians in Norway, of which about 22 170 are under 67 years of age, which is the general age of retirement in Norway. Out of these 21 382 or 96,4 % are members, and 45,3 % are women. Among physicians under 67 years of age in Norway the mean age is 41,0 years for women and 47,1 years for men, totally 44,4 years. At least 16,3 % have foreign citizenship (at least 3 600), most from Germany (822), Sweden (635), Denmark (436), Poland (143), Iceland (122), Netherlands (110), Serbia (104), Russia (99), Iraq (91), Lithuania (74), Hungary (68) and Finland (66).
