Studies show that the risk of falls and hip fractures more than doubles in older adults treated with benzodiazepines or other sedatives. Falls and hip fractures are associated with an increased risk of hospitalization and death. Additionally, benzodiazepines have been linked to a higher risk of delirium, especially in frail older adults and those with cognitive impairment. These risks should be carefully considered when managing sleep problems in older adults, and non-pharmacological interventions should be the preferred approach.
