The Research Institute of the Norwegian Medical Association is a small independent unit with four researchers and three auxiliaries, located at the secretariat of the NMA in Oslo. Since its inception in April 1992, the institute has been the originator of more than 300 scientific articles, 11 PhD theses and three books. This year the institute celebrates its 20th anniversary and the following is a modified version of my opening address at the anivercary conference."
